Site selection
In late 2021, the existing Ryde Hospital campus was chosen as the location for the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment (the Redevelopment), to be transformed into a state-of-the-art health facility.
Staff and the local community provided key feedback into the site selection process via a survey and face-face drop-in sessions. Two potential sites were assessed - the existing hospital campus and the Macquarie University campus.
After an extensive consultation process, the hospital building on the existing campus was assessed as the most suitable location. The results were analysed in detail to make sure all feedback was properly considered alongside the master planning and technical studies conducted by independent expert advisers.
Clinical services planning
The Clinical Services Plan (CSP) forms the foundation of the planning for the Redevelopment and outlines the health services requirements for Ryde Hospital and the community over the next 10 years.
The CSP considers how the health care needs of the community can be serviced into the future, taking into account forecasts of the population’s changing needs, and other clinical networks and relationships with nearby hospitals and health facilities.
Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) developed the CSP in consultation with:
- health service staff and consumer representatives
- clinical networks and the NSLHD Executive and Clinical Council
- affiliated organisations, service delivery partners, universities and local government.
Master plan
The Ryde Hospital Redevelopment campus master plan was developed in consultation with local and state government agencies, clinicians, operational staff and the community.
The key purpose of master planning is to develop a framework for how key clinical connections and requirements can be supported with different types of infrastructure.
It also looks at how this infrastructure can be located and connected to existing and new health networks, including supporting infrastructure like transport and utilities.
The master planning phase also addresses:
- how people will get to and from the hospital and how the hospital works as a place.
- what associated facilities and development will add to the healthcare facilities
- how the hospital will expand and be renewed to provide high quality health services into the future.
Integrated project team
The Redevelopment is strengthened by an Integrated Project Team. These specialists work together to deliver the best possible outcome for patients, staff and the community.
The team include specialists from:
- clinical and health planning
- heritage, architecture and design
- transport and traffic
- sustainability and environment
- connecting with country
- communications and engagement
- engineering and construction.
Concept design
The concept design for the $526.8 million Ryde Hospital Redevelopment (the Redevelopment) demonstrates the connections with existing heritage buildings and the nearby Blue Gum High Forest.
The design includes the use of green space to create a welcoming environment for staff, patients and visitors.

Schematic design
Early engagement for the Redevelopment provided the project with genuine feedback from staff, residents, consumers and the broader community to inform the design process.
This engagement continued throughout the schematic design process, which was completed in 2022.
The Redevelopment was assessed under a two-staged planning process. The first State Significant Development (SSDA1) was submitted in mid-2022, for the project's envelope and early works.
A second and more detailed State Significant Development (SSDA2) for the detailed design and main construction works was submitted in late 2023, following an in-depth consultation process.
A second and more detailed State Significant Development Application (SSDA) for the detailed design and main construction works was submitted in early 2023, following an in-depth consultation process.
The SSDA1 was approved in mid 2023 and SSDA2 was approved in mid-late 2024.

Community engagement
Community input into the planning, design and delivery of the Ryde Hospital Redevelopment is essential in creating a welcoming facility that meets the health needs of the community well into the future.
The Ryde community provided insights and feedback throughout the planning of the new facility to help inform key decisions such as the most appropriate location for the hospital, staff and visitor car parking and hospital design.
Feedback has been received via a series of face-to-face and online community consultations, and through consumer groups with representatives from the local community.
Input from consumer groups was vital throughout the planning and design phase and will continue throughout construction.
